A Hobby Revisited (60s Westy)

Years and years ago I used to build plastic model kits. It was a hobby I greatly enjoyed. There were models that I built that I was proud of. There were models that I built that were hot garbage. At some point I stopped doing that. I don’t know when that was, and I don’t know what happened to the many, many models that I built. I know that I’ve been wanting to try again for a while, so this summer I did. I found a model of a classic VW

Westfalia, and I built it.

It turned out — not great.

To a large extent, it was because I didn’t know what I was doing. I picked up bits and pieces (tools, I mean) here and there, and slowly I managed to get everything put together.

The doors don’t fit quite right. I painted most of the white on the panels by brush, the purple was spray painted. There are punch holes that I didn’t fill in, the doors don’t quite fit just right. Basically, there are a lot of little things that I got wrong.

But on the up side, even though it didn’t turn out great, I had a lot of fun building it. I think I’ll buy a couple of kits and practice. Oh, and I bought an air brush. I wanted an airbrush when I was a kid building these models and never could afford one. Now it turns out I can!
