This is a great ol’ standard. It’s kind of like a lasagna, but creamier and makes a good bunch o’ food. It’s very filling and makes a lot. This started as a recipe from Rose Reisman’s Weekday Wonders cookbook, which was my bible in my single life. I’ve made some minor additions. Ingredients: Directions:
I make this bread once a month for sandwiches for lunch. This recipe makes 4 loaves. This started as the “Soft white Sandwich Loaf, American Style” from the Home Baking cookbook by Jeffrey Alford and Naomi Duguid (highly recommended book). There are some (very) minor deviations from the recipe in that book. Biga Make the […]
The best cinnamon buns (in the world) come from Grounds for Coffee. But I can’t get them anymore because I moved out of Vancouver in 2008. (My brother mailed them to me for my birthday once, which was awesome) The UBC cinnamon buns are pretty good, too. I ate a lot of them when I […]
Lemon pound cake is my fave, but this orange pound cake is pretty good. You could probably use lemons instead of oranges. Just sayin’. Actually, you known what? I used lemons instead of oranges, and it worked great. I’m just going to go ahead and revise the recipe accordingly. Ingredients: Directions: Glaze Directions (do this […]
We’ve been making this for desert on Christmas day for over a decade. It’s very good and keeps well in the fridge for leftovers for several days. It can be finicky, and I’ve left some pointers as footnotes from lessons learned. The Ginger Bread Cake Ingredients: Directions: Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream […]
These are kind of like chocolate orange cheesecake cookies. We make them every Christmas. Ingredients: Directions:
(aka The Bourbon Slushy) Great for really hot days on the porch. Put a few mint leaves in a julep cup with a 1/2 oz of simple syrup and muddle well. Pack cup with crushed ice and add 2 oz of bourbon. Garnish with a sprig of mint.
I haven’t tried this one yet, but I hear it’s a favourite of Hemmingway and is supposedly good when it’s hot out. Requires lime juice and dutch gin (genever). Fill a tall glass with crushed ice. Juice a lime into it and add 4 dashes of bitters. Fill with genever.
This is good with bourbon, not sure about the rest. Makes 2: Mix in a shaker, pour into a martini glass or small rocks glass. Garnish with a lemon or orange twist. If you’re feeling fancy, you cant try a caramelized orange wheel, see recipe here: Carmelized Orange Slices.
